From Colour to Black and White

From Colour to Black and White

MUCA Gallery; Inge Morath Homage Exhibition Hah, I’m quite the arty birdy! When I heard the Oldies we were going to a modern art gallery, I thought I’d be out of my depth as usual. But I was chuffed that I immediately recognised the works of not just one, but two of the artists. Good old Andy Warhol is a very familiar face after our trip to Medzilaborce in Slovakia. Banksy, too, after our visit of the unofficial exhibition of…

At large in Munich

At large in Munich

Werksviertel District in Munich When the Oldies pitched up in Munich, I soon realised that almost everything here is on a much larger scale than I am used to. For a start, the Werksviertel where we were staying, is an enormous complex of buildings on the old Pfanni factory grounds. I’d never heard of it before, but this potato dumpling manufacturer is apparently a household name in Germany. The old works are now being converted and many new buildings added….

Spying Bratislava

Spying Bratislava

Socialist Architecture in Bratislava After our visit to the panalák, the Oldies were hooked. They spent the next couple of days searching out more Socialist Modernist architecture. Going for the top in Bratislava

Going for the top in Bratislava

Panalák, Petržalka, Bratislava Finally, I’ve got aboard the UFO! Yes, the Oldies made a return visit to Bratislava, and this time they did take me up the UFO tower on the SNP Bridge. Cool! I felt like I was in a sci-fi movie. So imagine my surprise when I heard that it was opened back in 1972. A 50-year-old flying saucer-like observation platform atop a tower on a suspension bridge. Now, that’s what I call futuristic! At a mere 95m…

From Darkness into Light

From Darkness into Light

Canadian Museum of Human Rights Winnipeg ‘All roads lead to Winnipeg’, said nobody, ever, I bet. Which is probably why the Oldies were so flabbergasted when they spotted a Graz-registered camper van in the city centre. Graz is about 25km from our home town, but in this context, these travellers were practically our next-door neighbours! But I wasn’t surprised about where in Winnipeg they saw the van – in the car park of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. There’s…
