The Wooden Road

The Wooden Road

The Wooden Road, Snina, Slovakia His Lordship said that he wanted to get out to the wildest, lesser known parts of Slovakia. Well, he hit the spot nicely here. We’re staying in the most north eastern campsite in the country, just outside Snina, close to the Polish and Ukrainian borders. In fact, the Ukraine is less than 20km away. Snina itself is decent sized town with a population of 20,000, but the campsite is located in the middle of a…

Cars and Caries in Piestany

Cars and Caries in Piestany

Concours d’Elegance, Piestany Every time we go back into Piestany, I fear another spa visit. The Oldies really love the treatments, but I’m not sure if I can take much more of the whiff of sulphur off the pair of them. Thank goodness for outdoor living! Luckily, there are other diversions. The Piestany Music Festival is on at the moment, and the Oldies treated themselves to a classical concert, would you believe. It was performed by the Slovak Chamber Orchestra…

The many faces of Šibenik

The many faces of Šibenik

Šibenik, Dalmatia A typical day on the campsite. His Lordship appears at the caravan door, looking decidedly sheepish. ‘I think I might need your help’. ‘Oh God. It turns out that His Lordship, probably after seeing so many other guys on the campsite tinkering around with boats or setting up satellite dishes, has lost the run of himself completely. He decided…

Naturally Beautiful Istria

Naturally Beautiful Istria

West Coast, Istria The joys of off-season camping! Our section of the campsite in Vrsar on the Istrian peninsula must consist of over 50 pitches, but with only about half a dozen currently occupied, we have a wonderful, uninterrupted view of the sea and islands. The weather is great and the Oldies are being particularly lazy, soaking up the sun by day and enjoying the ridiculously gorgeous sunsets each evening. Paradise! It’s not an entirely peaceful paradise, however. Spring has…

Hot and arid Arad

Hot and arid Arad

Makó, Hungary and Arad, Romania   I wasn’t joking about the potholing! The first 100 km from Debrecen to Makó was a series of potholes, bumps, ruts and ridges. His Lordship is more into heavy metal, but this was a case of rock and roll. Or, rather, shake, rattle and roll! Thankfully the roads eventually improved and I was finally able to enjoy the passing scenery without my eyes blurring. Various crops are grown on the plains, my favourites being sunflowers….
